East African Crude Oil Pipeline Project Set to Commence

The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project, a significant initiative in the region, is set to commence with the arrival of 5,000 pipes at the Dar es Salaam port in Tanzania. The project coordinator, Safiel Msovu, announced that pipe laying for the first 100 kilometers will start in April 2024, targeting completion by 2025. The Hoima-Tanga crude oil pipeline, spanning 1,443 kilometers, will be the world's longest electrically heated crude oil pipeline, with 1,147 kilometers passing through Tanzania and 296 kilometers in Uganda. The 24-inch diameter pipeline aims to transport 216,000 barrels of oil per day at a cost of $12.2 per barrel, starting in 2026. The project has faced challenges, including financial issues and environmental concerns. Despite setbacks, a $5 billion deal was signed in February 2022 between China National Offshore Oil Corporation, TotalEnergies, and China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering, solidifying the project's future.
